MakerHive is celebrating its opening with a free weekend of hands-on creative activities at 10419 Fawcett Street in Kensington, inviting visitors to make their own projects using recycled and repurposed materials.
The new creative studio features an assortment of upcycled supplies collected from thrift stores, salvage centers, and community donations. Materials are cleaned, sorted, and made available for visitors to use in their projects.
During the free opening weekend, participants can select a base and decorate it using materials such as buttons, plastic bottle caps, old keys, toy pieces, and other found objects. Visitors can work at their own pace and take home their finished creations. The activities are designed for ages 5 and older, with children under 16 required to be accompanied by an adult. Advance registration is available, although walk-ins are also welcome.
MakerHive was founded by Vanessa, an educator and longtime maker who wanted to combine her interest in creative projects with a focus on reducing waste. The studio provides materials, workspace, guidance, and cleanup, allowing visitors to focus on creating. Visitors are also encouraged to donate clean plastic bottle caps, small toy pieces, and holiday decorations, including artificial Christmas trees, wreaths, and ornaments.
