Mashed has selected what it considers the best bourbon from every state in the country, and a small-batch spirit produced on a Maryland farm earned the nod for the Old Line State.
Pathfinder Farm Distillery’s Bloody Butcher Bourbon, produced in Keedysville in Washington County, was selected as Maryland’s representative on Mashed’s nationwide list.
“We tracked down the best bourbon made in every state from some of the country’s best distilleries,” Mashed said of the list, which highlights bourbons produced across a wide range of climates and regions throughout the United States.
Pathfinder Farm Distillery is a farm-to-glass craft operation focused on small-batch, hyper-local spirits made using traditional Appalachian methods. The distillery is located at 5515 Mount Carmel Church Road in Keedysville and also operates a tasting room nearby in historic downtown Boonsboro.
Bloody Butcher Bourbon is made from 100% Bloody Butcher corn, a red, non-GMO heirloom variety grown directly on the family farm. According to the distillery, the grain contributes an earthy sweetness, deep color and robust flavor that distinguishes the bourbon from those made with more commonly used yellow corn.
Mashed also highlighted the bourbon’s use of Appalachian Mountain spring water and its recent success in competition.
In 2025, Pathfinder Farm earned Best of State and Best Farmer Distiller Bourbon honors at the American Craft Spirits Association’s Heartland Whiskey Competition for Bloody Butcher Bourbon.
Mashed described the finished bourbon as combining the sweetness of the farm-grown corn with a spicy bite.
