Aaron Gilchrist Returning to NBC4 Washington After Nearly Six Years

Aaron Gilchrist is returning to NBC4 Washington, nearly six years after leaving the station for NBC News.

Gilchrist announced his return Sunday, saying he will rejoin the anchor desk in the new year alongside Eun Yang and Shawn Yancy. “So thrilled to be returning to my adopted hometown and my good friends at NBC Washington! I’ll be back on the anchor desk weeknights with Eun Yang and Shawn Yancy in the new year. See you soon, DMV!” Gilchrist said.

Gilchrist left NBC4 in late 2020 to join NBC News, where he went on to anchor programming for the network’s streaming service, NBC News NOW. His return comes as longtime NBC4 anchor Jim Handly prepares to retire.

Gilchrist originally joined NBC4 in March 2010 as a weekend morning anchor and general assignment reporter before moving to weekday mornings in April 2012. He spent years alongside Eun Yang on News4 Today, the station’s morning newscast.

During his first run at NBC4, Gilchrist covered major local and national stories including presidential elections, the Washington Navy Yard mass shooting, major winter storms and the arrival of space shuttle Discovery in Northern Virginia. He also reported from Orlando and Las Vegas following mass shootings in those cities.

Before joining NBC4, Gilchrist spent 11 years at WWBT, the NBC affiliate in his hometown of Richmond, Virginia, working his way from desk assistant to morning anchor. Gilchrist is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University, where he earned a degree in mass communications and later taught journalism courses.

NBC4 has not yet announced an exact date for Gilchrist’s return, but he said he will be back on the station’s weeknight anchor desk in the new year.
