Maryland Man Ordered to Pay $171,000 in Restitution Following Tax Fraud Scheme

Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown announced that a 56-year-old Easton business owner has been sentenced to 18 months in jail for a tax fraud scheme involving the sale of jet skis, dirt bikes and trailers.

Robert David Michael, owner of B&E Motorsports, LLC, in Talbot County, was sentenced on October 27 after pleading guilty to felony theft, felony identity fraud, perjury and filing a false income tax return.

According to the Attorney General’s Office, Michael carried out the scheme between July 2018 and June 2025 by collecting the correct amount of sales tax from customers but submitting falsified documents to state agencies showing lower sale prices. He then kept the difference and also underreported income on state tax returns.

Michael has paid $171,450.07 in restitution and was ordered to pay an additional $25,000 fine. He is scheduled to begin serving his sentence on December 18, followed by five years of supervised probation.
