Maryland Restaurant Named One of the Best Under-the-Radar Spots in America

Founding Farmers has been named Maryland’s selection on Cheapism’s list of “The Best Under-The-Radar Restaurants in Every State.”

For the list, Cheapism said it reviewed sites including Yelp and Tripadvisor, along with local news reports, to identify what it described as the “best-kept secret” restaurant in every state and Washington, D.C. Cheapism selected Founding Farmers for Maryland, highlighting several items from the restaurant’s menu.

“Founding Farmers is renowned for its spatchcock chicken ($19), a quarter-bird quick-roasted in an 800-degree oven,” Cheapism wrote. The publication also highlighted the restaurant’s scallops Meuniere, slow-braised beef short rib, house-made chicken pot pie, and chicken and spinach enchiladas.

Founding Farmers operates a Montgomery County location at Park Potomac in Potomac and has continued to expand its presence in Maryland. The farmer-owned restaurant, catering, and distilling company recently moved its Washington, D.C. headquarters to a 17,000 SF facility at 8100 Cryden Way in District Heights. The company purchased the Prince George’s County facility in 2024 to expand its commercial kitchen and plans to create more than 90 new full-time jobs by the end of 2027.

The facility is now fully operational and serves as both the company’s headquarters and a production center for its restaurants and catering business. It produces scratch-made products including house-roasted coffee, handcrafted chocolates, and fresh-baked pastries while also housing catering operations, administrative functions, holiday offerings, culinary classes, and the company’s contact center.

Founding Farmers operates eight restaurants and employs more than 1,400 people throughout the Mid-Atlantic. The concept was created in 2005 and is majority owned by American family farmers, including members of the North Dakota Farmers Union. Its first restaurant opened in Washington, D.C. in 2008.

This is also not Founding Farmers’ first recent recognition from Cheapism. The publication previously selected Founding Farmers as Maryland’s best brunch spotMaryland’s best brunch spot.
