The Takoma Park Police Department has sent out a a community safety alert that extends beyond Takoma Park making the community aware of a disturbing trend circulating on social media, specifically TikTok, called “The Door-Kicking Challenge.”
Per Takoma Park Police, “The door-kicking challenge encourages individuals to kick in doors of homes and businesses for social media fame. This dangerous activity poses significant risks to property and personal safety. This disturbing trend isn’t isolated to Takoma Park. Reports suggest that it’s happening in cities across the country.
This is a misdemeanor crime under Maryland Statute §6-301 and commonly referred to as “Malicious Destruction of Property.” The penalty depends on the extent and value of the damage and ranges from 60 days in jail and a fine up to $500 to three years in jail and a fine up $2,500. Please remember:
- If you see suspicious activity in your neighborhood, report it to local authorities immediately.
- Always secure your doors and windows, and consider installing security measures if you haven’t already.
- Talk to your children about the dangers of participating in such challenges and the consequences of their actions.
- Keep an eye out for unfamiliar individuals loitering in your area. If you see something suspicious, don’t hesitate to contact local authorities.
