With Americans donating around $560 billion to charity per year, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on the Most Charitable States. Maryland came in ranked as the #6 most charitable state in the country.
According to WalletHub, Americans do more than just reach in their pockets to help others. They also contribute their time — and plenty of it. Nearly 61 million people volunteer in the U.S., serving a combined total of 4.1 billion hours per year, the equivalent of $122.9 billion in contributions.
WalletHub compared the 50 states across 17 key indicators of charitable behavior to identify the most charitable areas of the country. The data set ranges from the volunteer rate to the share of income donated to the number of food banks per capita. Generosity in Maryland (1=Most Charitable; 25=Avg.):
