Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a two-vehicle collision with a fully engulfed vehicle fire around 4:15 a.m. on Friday, November 29, on southbound I-270 near Rockledge Dr and Old Georgetown Rd.
MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer reported that the collision resulted in one fatality, with the individual trapped in a burning car, and four others transported with Priority 2 trauma injuries. Southbound I-270 remains closed as emergency crews respond.
The Metropolitan Area Transportation Operations Coordination (MATOC) issued the following alert at 5:57am: “Crash with Injury. I-270 SB before MD-187 (Exit 1). Montgomery County, MD. All travel lanes remain blocked with ongoing clean-up and recovery operations from overnight incident. Traffic is diverted to Rockledge Dr. An extended closure is expected. Delays are building.”
8:25am Update: All southbound lanes of I-270 before Old Georgetown Rd (MD 187/Exit 1) have reopened from earlier traffic incident. Expect residual delays.
