Michelle Meyer, the dedicated art teacher who has been at Pine Crest Elementary School in Silver Spring for 26 years, has once again collaborated with the talented team of specialists at the school to create a stunning hallway display that captures the spirit of winter. This year, the focus has been on the South Pole and Antarctica, fostering a festive and inclusive atmosphere for students and staff alike (photos below).
For the past three years, Meyer and the team of specialists at the school have worked diligently to design engaging and imaginative backdrops that celebrate the winter season. Two years ago, they crafted a captivating globe backdrop, and last year, they transformed the media center hallway into a whimsical gingerbread house. This year, their creativity has taken shape in the form of an igloo made from recycled milk cartons.
The process of creating the igloo has been an exciting journey, engaging students and staff in a collaborative effort. Students eagerly donated the milk jugs, shared their ideas, and expressed their excitement as they watched the display evolve day by day. The project not only sparks creativity but also provides an opportunity for students to learn about the differences between the South Pole and the North Pole, enriching their understanding of geography while celebrating the winter season.
In a clever twist, the third graders at Pine Crest have been focused on the North Pole and the enchanting Northern Lights. To create a dynamic contrast, the media specialist introduced the fifth graders to the wonders of the South Pole. This collaboration allows students to draw inspiration from the display in the lobby, with fourth graders currently working on animal drawings, using penguins as a source of creative influence– though they are encouraged to explore their own ideas as well. The overarching goal of this initiative is to foster a sense of belonging and excitement among both staff and students, uniting them around a common theme while enhancing the visual appeal of their school lobby.
Meyer’s approach emphasizes inclusivity and community involvement, ensuring that every student feels connected to the project. As the holiday break approaches, the anticipation builds, with students and staff alike looking forward to the daily additions that make this display a true reflection of their collective effort and creativity.
This winter display at Pine Crest Elementary serves as a reminder of the joy and wonder that art can bring to a school community. Through her vision and the collaboration of her team and students, Michelle Meyer continues to inspire and uplift, creating a space where creativity flourishes and winter festivities come alive.
