Montgomery Blair HS Social Worker and Alumna Emily Callaghan Receives Martin Luther King Peacemaker Award

MCPS recently shared that Emily Callaghan, a dedicated social worker at Montgomery Blair High School, has been recognized with the prestigious Martin Luther King (MLK) Peacemaker Award for her exceptional contributions to fostering a supportive environment for students. The award, presented by the Montgomery County Street Outreach Network (SON), honors individuals who significantly impact community improvement and peacemaking initiatives.

MCPS shares that in her role, Callaghan is instrumental in assisting students as they navigate personal and academic challenges. Her work encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, from addressing mental health concerns to providing crisis intervention, all aimed at ensuring that students feel seen, heard, and supported. “Emily is an incredible resource for our students,” said Blair Principal Kevin Yates to MCPS. “She has created so many meaningful relationships with our students and their families. We are so fortunate to have her as part of our team.”

What truly sets Callaghan apart is her remarkable ability to build deep connections with students from diverse backgrounds, particularly within the Latino and immigrant communities. Although she was born in the United States, her parents immigrated from El Salvador, giving her a unique perspective on the challenges many of her students face. This personal experience allows her to relate to students who encounter similar barriers, making her support even more impactful.

As a proud alumna of Blair, Callaghan is deeply passionate about creating an environment where students feel valued and understood. “I strive to be a constant source of support for students,” she expressed to MCPS. “Whether it’s helping them through a tough moment or guiding them toward a brighter future, my goal is to make sure they know they are not alone.”
