Two educators from Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) have received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST), the highest honor bestowed upon K-12 math and science teachers by the U.S. government. Joan Shane, a math content specialist at Sligo Middle School, and Krishni Patrick, a 5th-grade teacher at Piney Branch Elementary School, are among six award recipients from Maryland.
Shane and Patrick are part of an elite group of educators recognized annually, with only 110 teachers honored across the nation. Each state selects a maximum of six finalists, who are then evaluated by a national committee that recommends up to two teachers from each state for the award. To support their nomination, each teacher works with a mentor throughout the process.
MCPS shared that before entering Joan Shane’s classroom, visitors are greeted by her math philosophy displayed on the door: “I don’t believe that people hate math, not for one minute. People hate feeling anxious, confused, and confounded by math. The problem, therefore, is not with math, but how math is taught.” Shane emphasizes that when math is taught with care, precision, and passion, students will develop a love for the subject.
Krishni Patrick’s teaching philosophy centers on creating enriching learning experiences that enable her students to excel in science. Recognized for her excellence in science education and commitment to elevating STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), Patrick focuses on fostering a culture of respect and partnership with her students and their families. “This award is a touchstone for realizing the power and potential of scientific inquiry and STEM for students,” Patrick expressed. “I am humbled, grateful, and honored to be in a community of such exemplary teachers. It is the pinnacle of my career trying to make science come alive in the eyes of children.”
As part of their recognition, Shane and Patrick each received $10,000 from the National Science Foundation and gained access to an alumni network of educators nationwide. They will also have the opportunity to join state and national committees for PAEMST, allowing them to participate in selecting future award recipients.
