North Bethesda Middle School Students Gain Unique Insights Through “Meet-a-Pro” Career Events

To expose students to a diverse range of career paths, North Bethesda Middle School (NBMS) has organized a series of “Meet-a-Pro” events throughout the month. Led by Career Advising Coach Bridget Afram and supported by her MoCo CAP team and Career Advising Champions, these sessions allow students to interact directly with professionals from various industries, providing valuable insights and inspiration.

This week, NBMS welcomes Joy Wang, an “On Your Side” reporter from ABC 7 News, who will visit the school during sixth and seventh periods to share her experiences in the field of journalism. Prior to this, a Virtual Meet-a-Pro event titled “Sketch to Story” allowed students to meet the author and illustrator of Nakia’s Wish, Ms. Ama Darkwa and Mr. Kojo Owusu, where they learned about their careers and discussed their collaborative process.

The “Medical Panel: Unlocking Pathways to Healthcare Careers” featured an engaging format during the 1st and 2nd periods, wherein students connected with healthcare professionals. The panel included two pediatricians, a health specialist from NIH, an infusion nurse, a dentist, and a veterinarian—one of whom is an NBMS parent.

The “Mrs. Afram: Behind the Glam – Career Spotlight” session provided students with insights into careers in the beauty industry. They heard from a makeup artist, nail technician, and hairstylist about their career journeys and then explored face charts, lip gloss, nail design, and braiding techniques.

In addition to these in-school events, NBMS students have been selected to participate in the upcoming Worlds of Work program, organized by Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) and taking place at Montgomery College on March 20th. This off-campus opportunity will further broaden students’ perspectives on the wide array of career possibilities available to them.
