Sherwood High School’s 53rd Rock ‘n’ Roll Revival Continues Longstanding Tradition

Sherwood High School’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Revival is back for its 53rd show—a tradition that has been going strong since 1971, with 2020 being the only year a live performance wasn’t held due to COVID-19 (a virtual show was produced instead). The event began when Sherwood students were inspired by a concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Since then, students audition for the show and spend months rehearsing with staff members to create a production that draws thousands of attendees each year.

According to Melissa Popham, Administrative Secretary to the Principal at Cedar Grove Elementary School, “Sherwood’s 53rd Rock ‘n’ Roll Revival opened this past weekend with three sold-out shows. Doors will open again at 7:30 p.m. on March 15 and 2 p.m. on March 16 in the Sherwood High School Ertzman Theatre. The beloved Olney tradition has been going strong since 1971, after several Sherwood students were inspired by a concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City.”

For over five decades, Rock ‘n’ Roll Revival has wowed audiences with its high-energy singing, dancing, and musical performances. This year’s theme, “Destination,” opens with “Rock & Roll Band” by Boston and closes with “We Built This City” by Starship.

The show is directed by Music Teacher Alex Silverbook and Choral Director Emily Chu. Silverbook, now in his 25th year directing the production, shared his enthusiasm: “I’m so happy to share this experience with our Choral Director, Emily Chu.” He praised Chu, saying she “has been nothing but amazing in her role and is an asset to Rock ‘n’ Roll Revival and the Sherwood High School family. We are having so much fun, and the two of us make a fabulous team.”
