At Hallie Wells Middle School in Clarksburg, a compassionate initiative known as the Care Closet is making a significant impact on students’ lives. Conceived in 2021 by parent Mrs. Sonal Purohit, who was then the PTSA president, the Care Closet was designed to provide essential everyday items to students who may not have access to them. Dr. Carla McNeal, the principal of Hallie Wells, highlights the importance of this resource in fostering a supportive school environment.
Mrs. Purohit’s original vision was straightforward yet profound: to create a space where students could obtain necessary items without worry or stigma. She began by seeking donations—both monetary and in-kind—to stock the closet with basic hygiene products such as deodorant, lotion, and feminine care items. As time has progressed, the inventory of the Care Closet has expanded to meet the evolving needs of students. Today, it includes a range of practical items such as socks, scarves, soap, toothbrushes, hair ties, and mittens.
The Care Closet is strategically located in the counseling suite, providing students with a safe and private space to access what they need. Dr. McNeal emphasizes that when students don’t have to concentrate on obtaining basic necessities, they can instead focus on their education and personal development. The initiative has received consistent support from the PTSA and generous community members who have contributed to its growth.
Students visit the Care Closet daily, knowing that it is a stigma-free zone where they can find the items that help them feel confident and prepared for school. Dr. McNeal articulates the school’s philosophy: when children feel loved, cared for, protected, and valued, they are more likely to engage fully in their education.
What began as a simple idea has blossomed into a school-wide and community effort that directly supports students while positively influencing the broader society. The Care Closet has become an essential part of Hallie Wells Middle School’s commitment to student well-being, and the school community takes pride in being able to provide this invaluable service.
As Dr. McNeal notes, the Care Closet is not just a resource; it is a vital component of fostering a nurturing and inclusive atmosphere where every student can thrive.
