Officers Recognized for Life-Saving Actions: ‘In More Than 20 Years of Emergency Medicine, I Have Never Seen a Wound as Deep’

Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) Officers Weber and Chen (District 2– Bethesda) were honored with a First Responder award for their significant role in aiding an unsheltered individual suffering from a severe infection.

According to Captain Amy Daum, during the incident, the officers collaborated with the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) to provide assistance to the individual, recognizing the seriousness of her condition. Their proactive approach involved encouraging the patient to seek medical care, which was crucial for her survival.

A paramedic involved in the situation praised the officers’ efforts, stating, “the officers made a choice to engage with the individual…no exaggeration, they saved the patient’s life. Had they let her walk away, she would have certainly died in the upcoming week. In more than 20 years of emergency medicine, I have never seen a wound as deep.” The paramedic acknowledged that while the patient faces a long recovery ahead, her chances for survival have improved significantly due to the timely intervention of Officers Weber and Chen.
