Jack Fitzgerald, Founder of Fitzgerald Auto Malls, Has Passed Away

Fitzgerald Auto Malls announced the passing of Jack Fitzgerald. Jack Fitzgerald founded the company in Rockville in 1966. Fitzgerald Auto Malls began as Fitzgerald’s Colonial Dodge with a focus on customer-driven value– an approach known as the “FitzWay.” Today, headquartered in North Bethesda, the company represents over twenty automotive brands across twelve locations in the Washington, DC metropolitan area and over 30 overall in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Florida.

Jack Fitzgerald has been a local business leader for nearly 60 years, employing more than 1,700 people and championing consumer interests and vehicle safety. In 1999, he launched the Fitzgerald Child Car Seat Inspection Program after learning about the dangers of improperly installed safety seats. Since then, Fitzgerald Auto Malls has partnered with national and local agencies to save lives by ensuring car seats are correctly installed.

Fitzgerald Auto Malls is also committed to animal welfare. In 2013, the organization teamed up with the Washington Animal Rescue League (WARL) to host adoption events aimed at ending animal homelessness. The full statement announcing his passing can be seen below:

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our founder, Jack Fitzgerald, on April 8, 2025.

Jack was more than the visionary behind Fitzgerald Auto Mall—he was a champion for fairness, a tireless advocate for customers, and a true believer in doing business the right way. From launching the “FitzWay” to pioneering car seat safety programs and leading us into 100% employee ownership, Jack’s impact reached far beyond the showroom floor.

He built a legacy rooted in honesty, compassion, and care for others. His passion, humor, and heart will never be forgotten—and his influence will live on in every employee-owner, every customer, and every family whose life he touched.

Thank you, Jack.
You built something truly special.
And we’ll make sure the world never forgets it.

That’s the #FitzWay
