The Comptroller of Maryland is reminding residents that today is the deadline to file state and federal personal income tax returns, with various free filing options and assistance available, and estimated payments required by the deadline to avoid penalties.
Per the news release distributed on Tuesday, April 15: “Today is the deadline to file state and federal personal income tax returns in Maryland. For taxpayers filing for an extension, they must pay any estimated taxes by the filing deadline to avoid additional interest or penalties.
A range of tax filing options is available, including IRS Direct File, which allows eligible Marylanders to file both their federal and state taxes securely online at no cost. Direct File saves time for filers by importing existing information from their IRS account and transferring some information from their federal return to their state return. An estimated 30 million Americans, including 870,000 Marylanders, are eligible to use Direct File, which is accessible from desktops and mobile devices. Taxpayers can access support via live chat maintained by the IRS for federal returns, and Code for America for state returns.
The Office of the Comptroller partners with several community partners to support Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites across the state and also provides free tax assistance by appointment at one of the agency’s 11 branch offices or virtually.
So far, the agency has processed more than 2.3 million personal income tax returns. The agency has also processed more than 1.4 million refunds worth an estimated $1.8 billion.
