Scam Alert: City Official/Police Department Impersonators Scamming Residents

The Takoma Park Police Department has sent out an alert to the community informing that they have been receiving emails and phone calls from both local residents and out-of-state individuals reporting a concerning scam. Individuals are purporting to work for the City or Police Department and are contacting people with claims that they’ve won a prize, but must first pay taxes or fees to claim it. In some cases, scammers are even sending photos in an attempt to make their communication appear legitimate.

Per Takoma Park Police: “Please remember: if you ever truly win a prize, you will never be asked to pay money up front, especially not through email or over the phone.

We have also seen an increase in reports of another common scam—calls or emails claiming you’ve won the Publisher’s Clearing House Sweepstakes. While this is a real sweepstakes, Publisher’s Clearing House does not call or email winners. Just as you’ve seen in their TV commercials, they only notify winners in person with a surprise visit—complete with balloons, flowers, and a check. They will never ask you for money.

If you are ever unsure about a call, email, or message you receive, please do not respond or send any money. Instead, report it to the police department or the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/.
