Gaithersburg

One of Maryland’s Most Unique Spots For Breakfast, Brunch, and Lunch

Discover a truly unique dining experience at Café Sophie, one of Maryland’s most distinctive spots for breakfast, brunch, and lunch. Located at 7940 Airpark Road in Gaithersburg within the Montgomery County Airpark, this European-style café with a Scandinavian twist not only serves up delicious fare but also offers an unparalleled view of the skies. Guests can choose to dine indoors or on the patio– soon to be fully open on May 9th– for an atmosphere where the sights and sounds of planes landing and taking off becomes part of the dining experience.

The café’s story is as fascinating as its setting. Named after the owners’ cherished dog, Sophie, the establishment is steeped in aviation history. Owner Sandy’s deep connection to the airpark runs back generations, with her grandfather and father, Bill and Jim Richardson, originally building and operating the facility in 1960. Sandy, now a pilot herself, grew up with the thrill of flight alongside her father, creating a backdrop for her passion.

It was on these runways of memory that she met her partner Tom—a professional pilot from Bergen, Norway, known for flying private charters across both the US and Europe. Tom’s serendipitous landing at the airpark, after which he “never took off,” only adds to the charm and allure of Café Sophie.

At the heart of Café Sophie’s allure is its creative and locally sourced menu, masterfully crafted by Chef Asael. The café partners with local purveyors such as Wagner’s Butcher for meats, South Mountain Creamery for dairy and ice cream, Binkert’s for authentic German sausages, and Fresh Baguette for delightful baked goods. Whether you’re in the mood for freshly baked muffins, cinnamon rolls, cookies, or specialty coffees, there’s something to satisfy every palate. Unique international beverages– including an irresistible Lingonberry Mimosa– complement the menu, making it a favorite destination for families, foodies, and those looking for a meal with a side of aviation spectacle.

Café Sophie’s hours are designed to suit early risers and weekend brunch enthusiasts alike. The café is open Monday, Wednesday through Sunday from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, while Tuesdays remain closed. Breakfast is served from 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM on weekdays and all day on weekends.

For anyone seeking a culinary experience that pairs local ingredients with aviation history, Café Sophie stands out as one of the most unique dining spots in Maryland. Whether you’re a local or just passing through the airpark, this charming café promises a memorable meal, an eye-opening view, and a taste of Scandinavian-European flair right on the runway of life.
