In 2023, the Washington Post ranked Steeze Burger as the #1 burger in the DMV. Laytonsville resident Hunter Karametos, founder of Steeze Burger, launched the pop-up burger business in 2022 after spending nearly a year sampling over 150 different burgers for research. Currently, he’s enjoying one burger a day throughout May (National Burger Month) and shares a few words about three of his favorite local burgers below:
“Sunshine General Store (22300 Georgia Ave. Brookeville, MD): Nestled in the back of a Gas station you have driven past 100 times sits a local gem that blends historical charm with burger excellence. My personal favorite and one of the best burgers in Montgomery County comes from Sunshine General store in Brookeville, MD.
Opened in 1947 as a gas station and small general store was a popular stop and one of the only stops for gas along Georgia ave. Close to 10 years later opened a small kitchen in the back of the general store and these cheeseburgers were born. A 8oz loosely formed patty is place on the flat top with some seasonings. Meanwhile a toasted bun gets mayo, mustard and ketchup on the crown, while the heel gets lettuce and tomato. Once flipped the seasoned patty gets a slice of cheese, placed on the bun and cut in half. This burger absolutely screams nostalgia.
Since Sunshine has opened, this quaint establishment has stood witness to Montgomery County’s evolution, becoming a living archive of the county’s history. The interior is adorned with all the classic general store amenities from old photographs/artifacts to the newest flavor of Doritos and Mountain Dew. In essence the Sunshine general store encapsulates the spirit of northern Montgomery County and its heritage, offering not just an amazing cheeseburger but an experience that bridges the gap between the county’s storied past and its promising future.

Quarry House Tavern (8401 Georgia Ave. Unit B): The Quarry House Tavern, located in Silver Spring, Maryland, boasts a rich history that dates back to the 1930s. Originally established as a barbershop during the Prohibition era, the establishment transformed into a tavern after the repeal of the 18th Amendment in 1933 holding Montgomery County’s second liquor license.
Over the years, the Quarry House Tavern has evolved into a beloved neighborhood institution, renowned for its cozy atmosphere and extensive selection of craft beers. One of the standout features of the Quarry House Tavern is its legendary burgers.
The tavern’s menu is revered for its mouthwatering creations, with the burgers often stealing the spotlight. My personal favorite is the QH burger, it consists of a juicy 7oz angus beef patty, lettuce, tomato, onion and QH sauce. I like to pair mine with cheese tots and an ice cold local beer. The combination of its historical significance, delectable burgers and the pioneering liquor license Make Quarry House Tavern an enduring symbol of Silver Springs vibrant cultural heritage.

Whites Ferry Grill (24801 White’s Ferry Rd. Dickerson, MD): Situated on the Potomac river, Whites Ferry connects Montgomery County, Maryland with Loudoun County, Virginia. The ferry traces its roots back to the 18th century when it began operations, becoming an integral part of the regions transportation network. Today, the ferry stands as a nostalgic link to the past, unfortunately out of commission.
Next to Whites Ferry is the charming Whites Ferry Store, which houses a quaint take out that adds to the allure of this historic sight. Within the Whites Ferry Store, the take out boasts a standout menu item I consistently crave – The Burger!
One of my favorite local burgers, renowned for its juicy, well-seasoned patty nestled between a soft and squishy bun. Whether you’re a history enthusiast stopping by after exploring the ferry’s heritage, or a hungry traveler seeking a satisfying meal, the Whites Ferry burger promises a delicious blend of flavors that perfectly complements the unique charm of this historic MoCo site.”
