Free Mountain Biking Program For Kids Begins This Month

Montgomery Parks is inviting kids ages six and up to hit the trails this spring with Roots to Rocks, described as a “thrilling, free youth mountain biking program that’s all about fun, adventure, and exploring Montgomery Parks trails.”

Per Montgomery Parks: “The program is designed to expand access to the outdoors, so all equipment is provided for those who need it. Registration is now open, and space is limited so early sign-up is encouraged.

Roots to Rocks provides guided trail rides for all skill levels and teaches youth essential biking skills such as trail etiquette, bike safety, and basic mechanics. Through ride clinics and group rides, participants will improve their riding ability, enjoy the health benefits of mountain biking, and develop a strong connection to nature and their community.

“We want to make mountain biking more inclusive and welcoming,” said Miti Figueredo, Montgomery Parks director. “Roots to Rocksis about empowering young riders with confidence, skills, and access to the trails—whether they’re seasoned riders or hopping on a bike for the first time.”

As part of the program, Montgomery Parks hosts free Learn-to-Ride events for beginners, guided trail rides for the whole family, clinics, and bike park days to improve your skills. More details are on the Roots to Rocks website page. Program participants will:

  • Take part in guided trail rides suited to their skill level
  • Learn trail etiquette, bike safety, and basic maintenance
  • Build confidence and skill through ride clinics
  • Discover the physical and mental health benefits of biking
  • Enjoy the camaraderie of group rides
  • Foster a greater appreciation for our natural spaces
  • Bring a bike or borrow one from the program
