Warmer weather is approaching and summer is just about a month away. The “bluest water in the state” can be found at the rugged mountains of Western Maryland’s Allegany County in Rocky Gap State Park, where there’s even a small beach for visitors to enjoy.
Rocky Gap offers a captivating blend of natural beauty and recreational opportunities. Encompassing over 3,000 acres, the park is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, providing a scenic escape surrounded by impressive cliffs, dense forests, and winding trails.
The park is characterized by its dramatic landscape, shaped by the erosion of Rocky Gap Run, which has carved a mile-long gorge displaying sheer rock faces and lush hemlock groves adorned with rhododendron and mountain laurel. Beyond its natural allure, Rocky Gap State Park also features the privately owned Rocky Gap Casino Resort, offering an additional layer of amenities for visitors.
At the heart of Rocky Gap State Park lies Lake Habeeb, a stunning 243-acre reservoir renowned for its remarkably clear, blue waters– often touted as the “bluest water in the state.” This pristine lake, fed by Rocky Gap Run, was created in 1970 when the Army Corps of Engineers dammed the run, and the park officially opened in 1974. Lake Habeeb is a testament to Maryland’s unique geology, as all of its lakes are man-made reservoirs.
The depth of the lake, reaching up to 74 feet, contributes to its vivid blue hue, as deeper, clear waters absorb more light, creating a darker blue appearance. The surrounding white rocks from Evitts Mountain further contribute to the lake’s clarity by filtering sediments before they enter the water.
Lake Habeeb is a hub for a wide array of water-based activities. Visitors can enjoy swimming at two public beaches, one in the day-use area and another at the campground. The lake is also a favored spot for boating, with restrictions on gasoline-powered motors to maintain its tranquility. Kayak, canoe, and stand-up paddleboard rentals are available, allowing visitors to explore the calm waters. Fishing is another popular pastime, with the lake boasting a diverse fish population including largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, trout (regularly stocked), panfish, and crappie.
Beyond the lake, Rocky Gap State Park offers extensive multi-use trails, including the 5.3-mile Lakeside Loop Trail that encircles Lake Habeeb, providing scenic hiking and biking opportunities. Camping options abound, from tent sites to RV spots, mini cabins, and yurts, ensuring a range of accommodations for those looking to extend their mountain getaway.
