On May 19, MCPS marked the start of construction for the new Burtonsville Elementary School with a groundbreaking ceremony (video below).
The event featured remarks from Board of Education President Julie Yang, Superintendent Thomas Taylor, and Burtonsville Principal Kimberly Lloyd. The school, located at 14709 Saddle Creek Drive, Burtonsville, is designed to better serve both students and the community.
The 100,000 SF facility will accommodate up to 796 students. Its media center on the ground floor, boasting high ceilings and ample natural light, along with art classrooms, will be strategically placed near a courtyard to promote outdoor learning. The school is slated to open at the beginning of the 2026–2027 school year.
