Owners of Historic Harewood Farm Issue Statement After Fire Destroys Their Home

Firefighters returned Friday morning to extinguish hotspots after a fire rekindled at historic Harewood Farm in Sandy Spring, following a destructive blaze that was initially contained Wednesday night. The Johnson family, current owners of Harewood Farm, have released a statement on the loss of their home:

We are devastated by the loss of our family home. While it is a historic property, it is first and foremost our home. It is a joyful place where we celebrated almost 50 years of birthdays, Thanksgivings, and family celebrations, along with the mundanities and routines of daily life. Some of the things we lost can never be replaced. But we are immensely grateful that no one was hurt. Thank you to all the firefighters and first responders who worked tirelessly to put the fire out. We do ask for privacy and that you hold our family and community in the light during this difficult time.

Roughly 75 firefighters responded to the original incident, finding heavy fire throughout the two-story farmhouse. The property, located in a non-hydrant area about 4,000 to 5,000 feet from Olney-Sandy Spring Road, sustained significant damage.

Initial reports suggested a possible missing occupant, prompting a full search of the structure; it was later confirmed the home was unoccupied at the time. No injuries were reported. The fire was determined to be accidental, though the specific cause remains undetermined.
