Officer Fires Weapon as Driver Accelerates Toward Him Following Report of Suspicious Vehicle

At approximately 2:50 a.m. on Saturday, June 29, officers with the Frederick Police Department were dispatched to the 1300 block of Mulberry Court for a report of a suspicious vehicle. The call followed a report of someone breaking into vehicles in the area of Hillcrest Drive and Orchard Drive.

Per the Frederick Police Department: “An officer located a vehicle believed to be connected to that earlier call and attempted a traffic stop. The driver did not stop and turned onto Mulberry Court, a dead-end street.

When the vehicle reached the cul-de-sac, the officer exited his marked patrol vehicle and began issuing commands. The driver accelerated toward the officer, prompting the officer to fire his service weapon. He discharged four rounds.

The vehicle, which was struck by gunfire, fled the scene. Officers located it unoccupied a short time later in a nearby neighborhood. While the vehicle shows damage consistent with gunfire, there were no reported injuries to the officer or any bystanders during the encounter.

This incident is being investigated in accordance with Frederick Police Department General Order 0720, which outlines procedures following an officer-involved shooting. The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave, as is standard protocol.
