Eager Fans From Across The State Travel to Maryland’s Only Cook Out Location For Viral Shake

The highly anticipated and beloved seasonal watermelon shake has returned at Cook Out, and families from across the state are visiting Maryland’s only Cook Out location (Salisbury) for a taste of the shake that’s only available in July and August.

Cook Out uses actual watermelon bits blended into their vanilla ice cream base. This provides a natural fruit flavor and a pleasant textural element with small chunks of real fruit, avoiding a “Jolly Rancher” artificial taste. On Thursday afternoon, we spoke with families who stopped by from five different counties in Maryland for a taste of the popular milkshake that requires a spoon rather than a straw.

The limited-time nature and unique flavor have earned it a dedicated fan base. Social media is often abuzz with excitement when it’s announced that the watermelon shake is back on the menu. Diners from Charles, Frederick, Montgomery, Prince George’s, and Washington counties raved about the shake with one family making the three hour drive just for the milkshake. “We are going to make a day of it and head to the beach, but we came specifically for the watermelon shake. All of us love it!” the Feight family from Washington County shared.

Originating in Greensboro, North Carolina, Cook Out has cultivated a loyal following thanks to its extensive, affordable menu and distinctive operating style. Its Salisbury outpost, strategically located in a college town and serving as the only Cook Out in Maryland, has become something of a culinary landmark since it opened in 2014.
