Michael Jordan Set to Return to Maryland For White Marlin Open

Ocean City, Maryland is once again abuzz with the anticipation of the annual White Marlin Open, the world’s largest and richest billfishing tournament. As the event draws near, bringing with it the promise of high-stakes angling and spectacular catches, excitement has reached a fever pitch with the confirmed participation of basketball icon Michael Jordan aboard his custom fishing yacht, “Catch 23.”

The White Marlin Open, celebrating its 52nd year in 2025, is far more than just a fishing competition; it’s a week-long spectacle that transforms Ocean City into the “White Marlin Capital of the World.” What began in 1974 with just 57 boats and a modest $20,000 in prize money has exploded into a global phenomenon. The 2024 event alone saw 318 boats, over 3,000 contestants, and awarded an staggering over $8.59 million in prize money, including a top individual prize of $3.7 million. This year’s tournament, running from August 4th to August 8th, 2025, promises to maintain that incredible momentum.

Anglers from across the globe converge on Ocean City to compete for millions in various categories, targeting white marlin, blue marlin, tuna, wahoo, dolphin, and swordfish. The rules are meticulously designed to ensure fair play and promote conservation. For instance, federal regulations mandate the use of non-offset circle hooks when deploying natural bait for Atlantic billfish. While prize money is awarded for weighed fish meeting minimum size requirements (e.g., 70 lbs for white marlin, 50 lbs for tuna), the tournament also emphasizes catch-and-release, with points awarded for released billfish.

The heart of the action takes place daily at Harbour Island Marina (14th Street and the Bay), where the official weigh-ins are held from 4:00 PM to 9:15 PM. These weigh-ins are a public spectacle, drawing thousands of spectators who gather to witness the dramatic moments as potential multi-million dollar fish are hoisted onto the scales. The suspense builds throughout the week, as fortunes can change with the tip of a scale.

Adding to the electrifying atmosphere is Marlin Fest, a free, family-friendly event held concurrently at the Ocean City Inlet. Marlin Fest offers live music, food, vendors, and a live stream of the White Marlin Open weigh-ins, creating a vibrant shore-side experience for those not out on the water.

Michael Jordan’s return to the White Marlin Open with his 82-foot Bayliss yacht, “Catch 23,” has once again captured headlines. Jordan, an ardent sportfisherman, has been a regular participant in recent years, often competing in the dolphin category.
