Four Maryland Gems Land on New York Times “25 Best Restaurants in DC” List

The culinary scene in Maryland continues to garner national attention, with four exceptional restaurants from our state making their mark on the New York Times’ updated “25 Best Restaurants in DC” list, released on July 28th.

Notably, three of these establishments are located right here in Montgomery County. The fourth, a beloved barbecue spot, represents Prince George’s County, further diversifying the flavors celebrated on the list.
Here are the Maryland restaurants that earned a coveted spot:

Kuya Ja’s Lechon Belly (Rockville): This fast-casual Filipino eatery has captivated diners with its authentic Cebuano-style lechon (roasted pork belly). Known for its incredibly crispy skin and succulent meat, Kuya Ja’s offers a taste of the Philippines along with other traditional dishes. We’ve seen the address listed as Rockville, North Bethesda, and Kensington, but it’s all the same place. Photo here.

Pupuseria Mama Emilia (Rockville): A true local favorite, Pupuseria Mama Emilia is celebrated for its exquisite Salvadoran pupusas. These thick, handmade corn tortillas filled with various ingredients like cheese, beans, and pork, have earned a loyal following for their authentic flavor and comforting appeal. Photo here.

These traditional flatbreads, often topped with za’atar and olive oil, are a delightful experience, offering a blend of crispy and chewy textures with aromatic spices. Photo here.

2Fifty Barbecue (Riverdale Park): Bringing authentic Texas-style barbecue with a “pinch of the tropics” to Maryland, 2Fifty Barbecue has become a must-visit for pitmaster enthusiasts. Their slow-smoked meats and Latin American-inspired sides create a distinct and memorable culinary journey that has earned them widespread acclaim.
