Multi-Vehicle Crash Causes Major Delays on I-495 Monday Morning

A multi-vehicle crash on I-495 Southbound Outer Loop at the American Legion Bridge led to significant traffic disruptions early this morning, according to updates from the Metropolitan Area Transportation Operations Coordination (MATOC).

The incident was first reported at 6:00 am, with initial reports indicating that the crash had blocked three right lanes, leaving only the left lane open. The resulting traffic delays extended approximately three miles, starting before MD-190 (Exit 39/River Road).

By 6:13 am,  MATOC provided an update that conditions had slightly improved; three left lanes were now open while one right lane remained blocked. However, the crash continued to cause significant delays, impacting areas further along the I-495 Outer Loop, with congestion beginning after MD-187 (Exit 36/Old Georgetown Road) and extending onto the I-270 Spur, starting after Democracy Boulevard (Exit 1).

The situation was resolved by 7:46 a.m. when all travel lanes were reported open. Despite the clearance of the crash site, residual delays persisted, with traffic backups still observed before MD-187 (Exit 36/Old Georgetown Road) and before the I-270 Split.

Commuters are advised to remain patient and allow extra travel time as traffic conditions gradually return to normal. Motorists are also encouraged to stay informed of further updates through traffic alerts and consider alternative routes if possible. The cause of the crash has not been disclosed, and it is yet unclear if there were any injuries.
