After more than three decades as a cornerstone of the District’s craft beer community, Capitol City Brewing Company (1100 New York Ave NW, Washington, DC) has announced its permanent closure. The brewpub, which was the first of its kind in DC after Prohibition, will serve its last customers on Thursday, August 28, 2025.
The brewery made the announcement on social media, sharing a heartfelt message with its patrons and the wider community. “33+ years, countless pints, and one unforgettable run. Cap City, the District’s first post-Prohibition brewpub, opened its doors on August 23, 1992. This August, we raise our final glass. 🍻” the post read.
Capitol City Brewing Co. invited the public to join them for a final month of celebration, food, and beer before they close their doors for good. “Please join us for our last rounds of great food, cold beer, and a heartfelt goodbye to the community (and team!) that made it all happen,” the message continued. “Our Last day is Thursday, August 28, so let’s close this chapter the way we opened it: together. We can’t wait to toast with you all month long.”
The closure marks the end of an era for the brewery, which has been a gathering place for locals and visitors alike for more than 33 years. Capitol City Brewing Company was a pioneer in the city’s craft beer scene, paving the way for the numerous breweries and brewpubs that have since opened across the DC area.
