When Returning to Buildings is Possible, 60% of MCPS Students will Remain Virtual
MCPS recently requested parents to complete the preference survey indicating whether they choose to have their student remain in a virtual learning model or have the opportunity for in-person learning experiences. This survey closed yesterday, December 7.
Last week it was announced to the public, “If you do not complete the survey by December 7, your child will remain in the virtual-only learning model.”
At the MCPS BOE meeting on December 3, it was shared that 51% of families had opted for their children to attend school in-person and 49% of families opted for their students to continue to learn in a fully virtual model. The December 3 meeting discussed results from 96,418 parent preference surveys.
Earlier today, Bethesda Beat shared updated numbers– reflecting an additional 20,000 responses. The data that they shared showed the following:
- 50.2% of respondents prefer for their students to remain in a virtual learning setting. This reflects a preference for the families of 63,760 students.
- 49.8% of respondents prefer for their students to have the opportunity to return to school buildings for a hybrid learning model. This reflects a preference for the families of 63,352 students.
- The families of 34,471 students did not respond to the survey, which means that these students will automatically be placed in a virtual-only model.
The current proposal recommends that some students start returning to buildings as early as January 12, with the general population returning February 1. However, MCPS has mentioned that these dates are not guaranteed and that they are looking to certain health benchmarks to dictate the start of these transitions.
As we reported earlier, the Board of Education has asked MCPS to reevaluate its previously announced metrics for reopening and to explore a strategy that prioritizes the return of the youngest students sooner.
The BOE will make a final decision regarding this framework during their December 15 meeting.
