Dollar Tree to Replace Staples in Germantown

Yesterday we reported that the Staples store at 20906 Frederick Road STE A is preparing for its permanent closure. A store manager has confirmed the office supply retailer will officially close its doors for the final time on Thursday, August 29th. However, the storefront won’t be vacant for long. Dollar Tree has secured the necessary permit to begin work on the space.

This move marks a continued expansion for the discount retailer in Montgomery County, with the new Germantown location potentially opening by the end of the year. The potentially rapid turnaround between the Staples closure and the start of renovations by Dollar Tree suggests a seamless transition for the property.

For years, the Staples location has been a go-to spot for office supplies, printing services, and back-to-school essentials for the Germantown community. Its closure reflects a national trend where traditional office supply chains have faced increasing competition from e-commerce and a shift towards remote work.

Dollar Tree, a company known for its value-oriented merchandise, has been actively growing its footprint in the area. The new Germantown store will add to its presence in Montgomery County, where the company has been moving into larger retail spaces to accommodate a wider selection of goods. Dollar Tree recently began construction on its upcoming store at 11130 New Hampshire Avenue in White Oak.

We’ve previously reported on the company’s growth in our area, including the recent opening of a Dollar Tree in Cloverly Town Centerin April 2025, in a space that was formerly a karate studio. Additionally, a new Dollar Tree store opened last year in North Bethesda, and another new location recently arrived in the Kentlands area of Gaithersburg.
