Bete Ethiopian Cuisine & Cafe Permanently Closes After 16 Years

After 16 years of operation, Bete Ethiopian Cuisine & Cafe, a beloved staple of downtown Silver Spring, has permanently closed its doors. The restaurant, located at 811 Roeder Road, has been cleared of its interior fixtures and furniture, according to Source of the Spring.

Bete, which means “my house” in Amharic, first opened in 2009. It quickly became a local favorite, earning praise for its authentic Ethiopian dishes. The restaurant was even recognized by prominent food critics, including Tom Sietsema of the Washington Post, who in 2015 recommended the kitfo at Bete, and stated that rivals any kitfo “dish for miles.”

The restaurant earned a 4.2 rating on Yelp in more than 200 reviews and a 4.4 rating in Google with more than 400 reviews. A replacement tenant has not been announced.
