Summer Has Been Declared Over in Maryland

As school sessions commence and coffee shops bring back their pumpkin-flavored beverages, it’s important to note that this year’s last summer day is technically on Monday, September 22. However, from a meteorological perspective, researchers and scientists mark September 1st as the official end of summer for statistical and record-keeping purposes. The Washington Post’s Capital Weather Gang (CWG) has already declared the season’s end in D.C., and MoCoSnow is calling it for Maryland as well, particularly here in Montgomery County.

Accuweather’s 30-day forecast, known for its general predictions with varying accuracy, indicates no further days reaching 90°F through September 26th. While there’s still a chance for a hot day or two after that date, it seems that fall has arrived early in Maryland, with the recent cooler weather and no heat waves on the horizon.

Jason Samenow of the Capital Weather Gang wrote, “Since we began this tradition of declaring the end of summer, we’ve never called the season over and the start of fall this early.” In the coming week, temperatures are expected to reach the upper 70s during the day, with lows dropping into the 50s at night. Early risers last week likely experienced the crisp morning air before settling into very pleasant daytime temperatures. Before long, we’ll be keeping an eye on winter storms.
