Community Rallies to Support Family of Gaithersburg Mother of Four Killed in Shooting

The community is coming together to support the family of 35-year-old Maritza Ferman Sorto, a mother of four who was shot and killed early Saturday morning in Gaithersburg.

A GoFundMe has been launched by Maritza’s sister to help provide financial support for her children during this difficult time. In the fundraiser, she describes Maritza as “a strong, hardworking mother who did everything for her children” and expresses deep gratitude for the community’s generosity and support.

According to the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD), officers responded around 2:42 a.m. on Sunday, August 31, to the 9000 block of Centerway Road for a reported shooting. They found Sorto outside the home suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, but despite lifesaving efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators identified 39-year-old Luis Antonio Quintanilla, Sorto’s partner, as the suspect. A warrant was issued charging him with first-degree murder. On Monday, September 1, Quintanilla was arrested in Irving, Texas after individuals who knew he was wanted for murder contacted local authorities. He remains in custody in Texas while awaiting extradition to Maryland.
