North Bethesda Man Fatally Shot by DC Police After Charging At Officers With Knives

A 31-year-old man from North Bethesda was shot and killed by DC Police Tuesday afternoon after authorities say he charged at officers while armed with two knives.

The incident occurred around 12:00 p.m. in the 5100 block of Sherier Place NW, according to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). Officers from the Second District had initially responded to a domestic disturbance call at 10:53am. Victims reported that the suspect had threatened to come to their home and damage vehicles.

While officers were still on scene speaking with the victims, the suspect, who was identified as Jonathan Boruch of North Bethesda, MD, arrived and ran toward the officers wielding two knives. Police say they issued multiple commands for him to drop the weapons. One officer deployed an electronic control device twice, but Boruch continued advancing. Both officers then fired their service weapons once, striking him. Officers immediately called for D.C. Fire and EMS, who provided medical aid. Despite life-saving efforts, Boruch was pronounced dead at the scene.

In accordance with MPD policy, the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave. The case is now under review by the department’s Internal Affairs Bureau’s Force Investigations Team, which investigates all officer-involved shootings in the District. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent review of the evidence.

MPD noted that body-worn camera footage will be released in compliance with District law. Anyone with information related to the case is encouraged to contact police at 202-727-9099 or text 50411.
