Maryland’s only brick-and-mortar magic shop is on the move. Maximum Magic Shop, which opened less than a year ago in Potomac, has announced that it will relocate to Rockville, with a re-grand opening scheduled for Saturday, October 4th. The celebration will include a free deck of cards for the first 25 visitors at the new location, 12345 Parklawn Dr., Rockville, MD.
The move comes as owner Max “Magic Max” Erdrich looks to make his unique shop more accessible. “Come celebrate with us at our new more centralized location for your convenience,” the shop shared in its announcement. Maximum Magic Shop first opened in November 2023 at 12944 Travilah Rd. in Potomac, tucked away upstairs past a long hallway. Despite its hidden setup, the store quickly became a gathering spot for local magicians and enthusiasts. It offers magic tricks, sets, lessons, and lectures… all tailored to help beginners and experts alike sharpen their craft.
For Erdrich, this venture is personal. About a decade ago, The Gazette profiled him as a 15-year-old Quince Orchard High School student making waves in the local magic scene. His passion was sparked years earlier at the legendary Barry’s Magic Shop, which operated for 38 years in Wheaton and Rockville before closing in 2012. Barry Taylor, Barry’s owner, even attended Maximum Magic Shop’s grand opening, cheering on the next generation of Montgomery County magic.
Erdrich himself got his start performing close to home, dazzling diners at the Ledo Pizza on Darnestown Rd. on Friday nights. These days, he continues the tradition at the Ledo Pizza on Westlake Dr. near Montgomery Mall, performing every other Thursday. Along the way, he received early mentorship from magician Luke Dancy, a consultant to Criss Angel.
Beyond the shop, Erdrich has kept busy bringing magic to the stage. Just recently, Maximum Magic Shop hosted a packed show at Give a Hoot Comedy Club in Gaithersburg, featuring a lineup of DMV-area magicians delivering a night of sleight-of-hand, illusions, comedy, and even hypnosis. That event was such a success that the magicians will return to Give a Hoot at La Mex on Shady Grove Road for another performance on Sunday, September 28th, with three more shows scheduled before year’s end.
With this move to Rockville, Maximum Magic Shop is stepping into a more visible space while carrying forward the tradition of local magic that once made Barry’s a household name. For Montgomery County’s community of magicians and curious newcomers, the re-grand opening promises a chance to celebrate — and maybe pick up a trick or two.
