A founder of Maryland’s Muslim community, Mrs. Sakina A. Mohammed, wife of (late) Dr. Azizali F. Mohammed, died peacefully at home on 3:12 pm on Friday October 3, 2025 at age 92. She was the beloved mother of Zeba (Stephen), Afroze, Arshad (Lois), and Mehnaz (Mini) and sister of Mr. Amin Nathani.
A fierce advocate for marginalized individuals, Sakina spent her life educating and fundraising for charitable causes, worldwide. Many Muslim families with disabled or special needs loved ones in the D.C. region came to know her as a mentor and matronly wisdom.
She is also survived by her grandchildren Hanya, Aziz and Sophia and many devoted nieces and nephews as well as several sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law. Mrs. Sakina and her late husband were among the founders of the Muslim Community Center (MCC), in Silver Spring, Maryland.
Sakina was one of the first members of MCC’s Board and was an inveterate fundraiser for MCC. She was tremendously dedicated to many charitable causes, including founding the Zauqi Charitable and Educational Trust, which established an inclusive school in the northern areas of Pakistan with special attention to children with disabilities.
Mrs. Sakina Mohammed leaves behind a legacy of charity, dedication to service, and profound care for her communities, in the US and Pakistan.
