The Shoppers Food store in Germantown, located at 18066 Mateny Road, has closed permanently as of Saturday, November 1. The Germantown location was one of four Maryland stores set to close by November 8, along with locations in College Park, Laurel, and Capitol Heights.
While no official announcement has been made regarding what will replace the store, sources tell us that representatives from multiple grocery companies have visited the space in recent weeks. A new tenant could be announced soon.
Shoppers, once a major grocery presence across the region, has been steadily shrinking its footprint in Maryland in recent years. Since being acquired by United Natural Foods, Inc. (UNFI) in 2019, the company has closed or transitioned many of its locations to other retailers. The Germantown store, known for its in-house bakery and the ability to sell beer and wine, served as a longtime shopping destination for area residents.
A handful of Shoppers stores remain open in the DC metro area, including Clinton, District Heights, Forestville, Bowie, Hyattsville, and Upper Marlboro, but the latest closures mark another major step in the chain’s ongoing pullback from the region.
