DICK’S Sporting Goods at 2 Grand Corner in Gaithersburg’s Rio Lakefront is deep into its planned conversion to DICK’S House of Sport, a next-generation concept designed to offer a fully immersive shopping and athletic experience. We first reported on the project in March, when plans for a major renovation were announced. Completion is now just a couple months away.
The $10.2 million upgrade brings the store in line with the brand’s rapidly growing House of Sport model, which features amenities not typically found in a traditional sporting goods store. Rock climbing walls, indoor tracks, and simulated golf driving ranges are among the signature elements that transform the space from a retail stop into an interactive destination.
“Compared to a typical Dick’s store, athletes are traveling farther to visit House of Sport, increasing the time they spend in the store and visiting more frequently,” DICK’S CEO Lauren Hobart said during an earnings call last year. The company currently operates around 20 House of Sport stores and plans to expand that number to between 75 and 100 locations by 2027.
The Rio Lakefront store has remained open throughout the renovation, with customers navigating between the two floors via stairs and an elevator. The escalators that previously connected the levels have been permanently removed and replaced with two wide staircases. The elevator remains fully operational.
Much of the renovation work is already complete, with the installation of the climbing wall listed as one of the last major additions still underway. A representative for the store shared that the full transformation is expected to wrap up by spring 2026.
We’ll continue to provide updates as the Gaithersburg location moves closer to becoming a full House of Sport experience.
