The Takoma Park Police Department has announced the launch of a four-year automated stop sign enforcement pilot program aimed at improving safety in school zones.
Authorized by the Maryland General Assembly through SB0600, the initiative will introduce camera-based enforcement at select intersections throughout the city, with installation beginning at the end of this week.
Each camera installation will take between one and two weeks to complete. The first locations are expected to come online during the first week of December, marking the start of a 30-day warning period. Full citation enforcement is projected to begin on January 5, coinciding with students returning to school after winter break.
Takoma Park selected Obvio, a safety-technology company focused on reducing preventable traffic deaths, as the vendor for the project. Obvio develops systems that monitor driving behavior, educate the public, and provide automated enforcement to curb dangerous actions, particularly those that put pedestrians and students at risk. According to the department, Obvio’s vision-powered cameras offer real-time analytics and Roadway Insights that help public safety officials address problems proactively, rather than relying solely on crash reports or community complaints. The company emphasizes fairness and transparency, noting that automated enforcement provides consistent and unbiased deterrence.
