The 1992 critically acclaimed film A Few Good Men is remembered for its powerhouse cast of Tom Cruise, Demi Moore, and Jack Nicholson, but one of its most memorable performances came from someone with strong Montgomery County roots: Wolfgang Bodison.
Bodison plays Lance Corporal Harold “Hal” Dawson, one of two U.S. Marines at the center of the film’s court-martial storyline. The movie follows Dawson and fellow Marine Louden Downey as they stand accused of murdering a colleague, while their lawyers work to uncover the truth behind the deadly “Code Red.” Bodison delivers a grounded, emotionally charged performance throughout the film, impressive on its own, but even more so considering it was his first-ever acting role.
Born in Washington, D.C., Brian Wolfgang Bodison grew up in Montgomery County, where his mother worked for the National Institutes of Health. He attended Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, graduating in 1984, before heading to the University of Virginia. There, he played football and earned a degree in fine arts, graduating in 1988.
Bodison’s path into acting was unexpected. He initially worked behind the scenes as a location scout for several filmmakers and was serving in that role for director Rob Reiner during the production of A Few Good Men. Reiner saw something special in Bodison and believed he could bring authenticity and quiet intensity to the role of Harold Dawson. Bodison earned the part, and delivered a performance that resonated with critics and audiences alike.
Following the release of A Few Good Men, Bodison returned to his alma mater as the commencement speaker for Richard Montgomery High School’s Class of 1993. His acting career continued with roles in television and film, including appearances in Akeelah and the Bee, ER, CSI, and many others. Today, Bodison lives in Los Angeles with his family.
