Metro riders across Montgomery County and the region can expect modified service schedules for Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day, along with free fares during a key window on New Year’s Eve, according to information released by WMATA.
To support safe and responsible travel, Metro will offer free bus and rail fares from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. on New Year’s Eve, Wednesday, Dec. 31. During that time, faregates will be open and customers will not need to tap to ride. The free-fare window is part of a partnership between Metro and Molson Coors.
Christmas Day (Thursday, Dec. 25): Rail service will operate on a Weekend Late Night schedule all day, opening at 6 a.m. and closing at midnight. Bus service will run on a Sunday schedule. Parking will be free at Metro facilities on Christmas Day.
Metro noted that while Christmas Eve and the day after Christmas were recently declared federal holidays, normal weekday service will operate on Wednesday, Dec. 24, and Friday, Dec. 26. Riders should also be aware that the Green Line continues to run every 16 minutes through Dec. 30 due to winter construction, which may affect trip planning.
New Year’s Eve (Wednesday, Dec. 31): Rail will operate on a regular weekday schedule and remain open until 2 a.m., providing two additional hours of service. Metro cautions that some stations, depending on direction of travel, may see last trains depart before 2 a.m. Riders are encouraged to check station-specific last train times on WMATA’s website or use the trip planner. Free fares will be in effect from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. Parking at Metro facilities will be free starting at 8 p.m. and will remain free through New Year’s Day.
New Year’s Day (Thursday, Jan. 1): Rail service will again operate on a Weekend Late Night schedule, opening at 5 a.m. and closing at midnight. Bus service will run on a Sunday schedule, and parking will remain free. Metro recommends riders plan ahead, especially for late-night travel on New Year’s Eve, and check schedules in advance to avoid missing the last train from their station.
