Sally’s Apizza, the legendary New Haven pizzeria frequently named Dave Portnoy’s favorite pizza place of all time, is setting its sights on a major expansion that includes plans for 15 locations in Maryland and another 15 in neighboring Virginia.
According to information shared by Sally’s Apizza, the brand has aggressive growth goals across the East Coast, with Maryland and Virginia identified as key markets in its strategic expansion plan. The company’s long-term targets also include 25 locations each in New York and New Jersey, 20 in Pennsylvania, 15 each in Massachusetts, Connecticut, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, 35 in Florida, and 45 in Texas.
Founded in 1938 in New Haven, Connecticut by Salvatore “Sally” Consiglio, Sally’s Apizza is one of the most iconic names in American pizza. The restaurant is known for its authentic New Haven-style apizza, hand-crafted in custom-designed ovens using the original recipes that helped make the brand famous. Its distinctive tomato sauce, chewy yet crispy crust, and signature oven-kissed char have drawn pizza fans from around the world for decades.
In recent years, Sally’s has gained even more national attention thanks to Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, who has repeatedly ranked Sally’s Apizza as his No. 1 pizza. Portnoy has also listed Sally’s at the top of his official Top 10 pizza places in the world, giving the brand enormous exposure through his reviews and national media appearances.
That visibility has coincided with rapid expansion. As of the fourth quarter of 2025, Sally’s Apizza has locations open in New Haven, Stamford, Fairfield, Wethersfield, and Farmington, Connecticut, along with Woburn and Dorchester, Massachusetts. Additional locations are currently under construction in Norwalk and Newington, Connecticut, as well as Boston’s Seaport District.
Looking ahead to 2026, construction is expected to begin on several more locations, including Cranston, Rhode Island; Concord and Weymouth, Massachusetts; South Windsor and Danbury, Connecticut; Garden City, New York; Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut; and Boca Raton, Florida.
While specific Maryland sites have not yet been announced, the stated target of 15 locations signals a significant future footprint in the state and suggests Montgomery County and the broader DC region could be prime candidates as the expansion moves forward.
If realized, the Maryland and Virginia buildout would mark one of the most ambitious regional expansions in the brand’s history, bringing one of America’s most celebrated pizza institutions much closer to local fans who have long made the trip to New Haven for a slice.
