Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a house fire in the 2500 block of Sheraton Street in Glenmont on Thursday, where a two story single family home sustained significant damage.
According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, the fire originated in the basement and wind conditions contributed to the rapid spread of the flames. Smoke detectors were present in the home but did not alert residents. All occupants were able to safely escape without injuries.
Fire officials estimate total damage at more than $300,000, including approximately $200,000 in structural damage and $100,000 in contents. Six adults and five children have been displaced as a result of the fire.
More than 65 firefighters were on scene battling the blaze and extinguishing hotspots while working in freezing conditions, with a feels like temperature near 12 degrees. EMS units provided warming and shelter assistance at the scene.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
