Olney Community Rallies Around Family After Tragic House Fire

The Olney community is rallying around Bill and Effie Poulakis following a devastating house fire that left them without a home, their belongings, and one of their beloved dogs.

As previously reported, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services responded Friday afternoon to a house fire on Holly View Court. Firefighters arrived to find flames on the exterior of the home that had spread inside. Two occupants escaped with two dogs and called 911. One person was injured and evaluated at the scene. A third dog was located and removed by firefighters but later died due to smoke exposure. The cause of the fire has not yet been announced.

In the days since the fire, neighbors and friends have stepped up to support the Poulakis family, launching a GoFundMe to help them begin rebuilding their lives. According to the fundraiser, the fire destroyed their home and everything inside, leaving them with only the clothes they were wearing.

The tragedy comes after an already painful period for the family. Just a year and a half ago, Bill and Effie lost their daughter, Tina, to cancer. Despite the overwhelming loss, those close to the family say they have expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of kindness from neighbors, friends, and first responders.

Funds raised through the GoFundMe will go toward immediate needs such as clothing, food, temporary housing, and other essentials as the couple works to regain stability. Organizers say many in the community have asked how they can help, and the fundraiser provides a direct way to support the Poulakis family during this difficult time.

Supporters describe Bill and Effie as touched by the compassion shown to them and thankful for everyone who has reached out in the aftermath of the fire.
