Extreme Cold and High Wind Warnings Remain in Effect Across Parts of Maryland And Virginia

Update: The Extreme Cold Warning now includes all of Montgomery County

The National Weather Service (NWS) says an Extreme Cold Warning and High Wind Warning remain in effect across parts of central Maryland through the weekend, bringing dangerously cold wind chills and potentially damaging winds.

The Extreme Cold Warning is in effect from 4am Saturday through 10am Sunday, with wind chills expected to drop as low as 15 degrees below zero. Officials say wind chills are likely to remain at or below zero throughout the day Saturday due to a combination of strong winds and cold temperatures.

At the same time, a High Wind Warning will be in effect from 4am to 7pm Saturday, with northwest winds sustained at 20 to 30 mph and gusts reaching up to 60 mph. The warnings cover portions of Northwest Montgomery County, Howard County, Cecil County, Baltimore County, and Harford County.

Forecasters warn that strong winds could bring down trees and power lines, leading to scattered power outages. Travel may be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles. The dangerously cold wind chills increase the risk of hypothermia and frostbite for anyone exposed to the elements without proper protection.

Residents are urged to remain indoors as much as possible, avoid windows during peak winds, and watch for falling debris or tree limbs if outside. Those who must travel should use caution. The National Weather Service also recommends dressing in layers, including hats, face coverings, and gloves, if going outdoors. Pets should be kept indoors when possible, and outdoor animals should have warm shelter, food, and unfrozen water. Residents are encouraged to check on elderly neighbors and family members, and to use portable heaters safely. Generators and grills should never be used indoors.
