NWS Raises Snow Potential With Confidence Growing in Narrow Band of Snow in Portions of Maryland and Northern Virginia

The National Weather Service (NWS) has increased potential snow totals for the region, with around one inch of snow now possible across much of the area.

The NWS forecaster’s discussion says confidence is growing in a narrow but impactful band of snow that is expected to move through later Monday. Snow may fall for a relatively brief period, but could be steady at times before tapering off. Per the NWS forecaster’s discussion:

“Confidence is increasing in a narrow, somewhat brief band of snow that will affect the area today. Mainly subtle changes have occurred to the wintry mix forecast tonight into Tuesday morning, with the highest confidence of accumulations continuing to be in the higher elevations. Some variations to the frontal position and rain chances will continue to occur during the second half of the week.”

Snow totals are now expected to reach up to about one inch in many locations, with higher elevations seeing slightly higher amounts. While daytime temperatures and early March sun angles may limit impacts during the day, snow could briefly accumulate on grassy surfaces.

The greater concern remains Monday night into Tuesday morning, when precipitation is expected to transition into a wintry mix. Ice accumulations are possible, especially in higher elevations, which could lead to slippery road conditions for the Tuesday morning commute.
