School Closure and Delay Prediction For Tuesday, March 3

Updated to note that PGCPS has retracted the previously called delay and will make a decision in the morning.

Snowfall Monday was largely as expected, with up to an inch accumulating mainly on grassy areas. Roads remained mostly just wet, with minimal travel impact through the afternoon and evening. The focus now shifts to freezing rain overnight as temperatures hover near freezing.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 10pm tonight until 10am Tuesday for portions of central Maryland and northern Virginia, including Montgomery County. The National Weather Service is calling for mixed precipitation, with total snow accumulations up to one inch and ice accumulations around one tenth of an inch. The primary concern is slippery roads during the early morning hours before precipitation transitions to plain rain by mid to late morning.

NWS forecasters note that light winds, marginal temperatures, and moderate precipitation rates argue against significant icing. Current guidance continues to favor the most impactful icing west of I-95, with strong pressure falls after 7am helping temperatures rise and ending any freezing rain by late morning.

Temperatures are not expected to drop significantly overnight, making a widespread closure unlikely at this time, though not impossible if icing becomes more widespread than anticipated. Any icy conditions should gradually improve through the morning as temperatures rise above freezing and precipitation changes to rain. Prince George’s County Public Schools has retracted the previously called delay and will make a decision in the morning.
