Dateline NBC, the long running newsmagazine program that focuses on investigative reporting and true crime stories, featured a Montgomery County murder case on Friday, March 6, in an episode titled “The Professor & The Poet.”
The episode examined the 2010 killing of 52 year old Sue Ann Marcum, who was found dead inside her home in the 6200 block of Massachusetts Avenue in Bethesda. According to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined Marcum died from blunt force trauma and asphyxiation.
Investigators with the Montgomery County Department of Police determined that Jorge Rueda Landeros, Marcum’s former Spanish and yoga teacher, had developed a personal and financial relationship with her. Authorities said Marcum lost about $312,000 in investments over roughly two years while Rueda Landeros gained about $252,000.
Rueda Landeros left the United States after the killing and remained in Mexico for more than a decade before being taken into custody in December 2022 during a joint operation involving U.S. and Mexican authorities coordinated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. In October 2026, a Montgomery County jury found him guilty of second degree murder, and this week he was sentenced to 25 years in prison by Judge Rachel McGuckian in the Montgomery County Circuit Court.
“When Sue Marcum is found murdered in her Maryland home, it appears to be a burglary gone wrong. But DNA from the scene points detectives toward someone she trusted. Josh Mankiewicz reports Friday, March 6 at 9/8c on NBC.”
